Sidon: The Environment Ministry launched an environmental initiative aimed at improving living conditions in displacement centres in Sidon. This initiative is being conducted in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme, with financial support from the European Union and implementation by local partner associations.
According to National news agency - Lebanon, the first phase of the initiative involves distributing 500 waste containers to over 25 shelters, which host approximately 10,000 displaced people in Sidon and nearby regions. The primary aim is to enhance hygiene, improve waste management, and create healthier living conditions for the displaced population.
The initiative also plans to conduct awareness campaigns, particularly targeting children, to promote waste sorting and reduction. These campaigns are being coordinated with the Sidon municipality to ensure effective communication and engagement with the community.
Environment Minister Tamara Elzein stated that the project represents an integrated environmental management model. It combines awareness, sorting, and proper waste handling. She also mentioned that the initiative has plans to expand to other areas, including Baalbek, Tripoli, and potentially Beirut, in the future.
