23rd SCO Summit Opens in Islamabad with High Hopes for Regional Cooperation and Development

ISLAMABAD: The 23rd meeting of the Council of Heads of Government of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) commenced in Islamabad on Wednesday under the chairmanship of Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The summit saw participation from the top leaders of eight member countries, with significant representation from observer nations, highlighting a unified approach toward enhancing regional connectivity, economic progress, and stability. According to Kuwait News Agency, the summit was attended by prominent figures including Chinese Premier Li Qiang, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, and the prime ministers of Kyrgyzstan, Belarus, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Mongolia. Representing India and Iran were Minister for External Affairs Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and a senior minister respectively. The leaders gathered to discuss a broad agenda focused on strengthening multilateral ties, economic cooperation, and addressing regional challenges such as climate change and stability in Afg hanistan. In his opening address, Prime Minister Sharif emphasized the SCO's critical role in fostering socio-economic development and regional peace. He expressed optimism about the potential outcomes of the discussions, which are expected to focus on connectivity initiatives, trade, and infrastructural development. Sharif particularly highlighted the importance of expanding major projects like the Belt and Road Initiative and the International North South Transport Corridor, aiming to enhance road, rail, and digital infrastructure across the SCO countries. Furthermore, the summit addressed the strategic framework for energy cooperation extending to 2030 and the new establishment of the Association of Investors, which Pakistan welcomed. Sharif also stressed the significance of a stable Afghanistan for realizing regional opportunities and urged both humanitarian support for the Afghan people and responsible governance by the Afghan interim government to prevent the use of its territory for terrorism. Addre ssing poverty alleviation and the urgent issue of climate change, Sharif called for concerted efforts to mitigate the impacts of climate-induced disasters, particularly highlighting Pakistan's vulnerabilities. He advocated for enhanced cooperation among SCO members to tackle these pressing challenges collectively. The Islamabad summit of the SCO thus sets the stage for deeper regional integration and cooperation among member states, aiming to achieve a prosperous and interconnected Eurasia.
