Beirut: UNIFIL commander Diodato Abagnera said on the occasion of Lebanon's 82nd independence anniversary that "the force reiterates its commitment to support its army." Abagnera added: "The full redeployment of the Lebanese army in the south of the country is a crucial step. Full respect for Lebanon's sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity is a central part of implementing Resolution 1701 and a condition for long-term stability."
According to National news agency - Lebanon, the commander emphasized the importance of Lebanon's territorial integrity for maintaining peace in the region. The anniversary marks a significant milestone for Lebanon as it continues to navigate complex political and security challenges. The presence of UNIFIL, which is tasked with monitoring the cessation of hostilities and assisting the Lebanese Armed Forces, remains a pivotal factor in the region's stability.
Resolution 1701, passed in 2006, calls for a full cessation of hostilities and the deployment of the Lebanese army in southern Lebanon. The resolution is seen as a framework for long-term peace in the region. Abagnera's remarks highlight the ongoing commitment of international forces to support Lebanese sovereignty and stability.
The context of these statements comes at a time when regional dynamics continue to evolve. Ensuring that Lebanon's military capabilities are strengthened in its southern regions is seen as a crucial element in maintaining peace and security for the nation. UNIFIL's role in this process underscores the collaboration between international forces and local authorities to achieve these objectives.
