Egypt condemns repeated incidents of Quran tearing in the Netherlands

Egypt has strongly condemned the tearing of a copy of the Holy Quran by an extremist in The Hague, Netherlands, on Monday, describing the repeated incident as a 'provocative and irresponsible act' that violates Muslims' sacred beliefs and promotes hate speech. In its statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs warned that the recurrence of these 'disgraceful and unjustified incidents" would lead to serious consequences. Such incidents incite violence, extremism, Islamophobia, and blasphemy while threatening coexistence in societies, read the statement. Furthermore, Egypt stressed that countries should be committed to banning these incidents and preventing them from recurring by taking measures to protect freedom of belief and hold blasphemers accountable. In his recent speech on Saturday at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, Egypt's Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry warned of the growing problems of racism, xenophobia, and Islamophobia. Shoukry said that these phenomena have increased violence and hatred against Muslim communities. He praised Denmark's latest measures to stop incidents of burning the Holy Quran in the country.
