Israeli Occupation Forces Demolish Commercial Facility in Wadi Al-Joz for Silicon Valley Project

Jerusalem: According to Maan News Agency, Israeli occupation forces, alongside municipal crews, demolished a commercial facility in the Wadi al-Joz neighborhood of Jerusalem on Tuesday. The facility, a shop involved in selling and refilling medical oxygen, was surrounded and subsequently razed as part of a controversial urban development plan known as the "Silicon Valley" project. The demolition marks the fifth such action within the Industrial Zone of Wadi al-Joz, following the destruction of four commercial and residential properties at the end of August. The ongoing demolitions threaten dozens more commercial and industrial facilities in the area, some of which predate the occupation of Jerusalem and serve as the sole income source for hundreds of Palestinian families. The area is recognized as the only industrial zone in East Jerusalem. The contentious "Silicon Valley" initiative, announced by the occupation municipality in June 2020, aims to transform the neighborhood into a technology hub inspired by its namesake in the United States. The plan involves allocating 200,000 square meters for high-tech companies, 50,000 square meters for hotel facilities, and another 50,000 square meters for commercial use. Additionally, the project promises to enhance green spaces, public transportation, and establish a new technical college specializing in advanced technology. Despite the municipality's claims that the project will bridge economic disparities and improve the livelihoods of Jerusalemites, the demolitions have sparked significant backlash and legal battles. Local residents have been contesting these actions in Israeli courts, striving to protect their properties and livelihoods. However, recent rulings from the Central Court have dismissed petitions from property owners, refusing to halt the project.
