Sharjah Heritage Sites Recognized on ICESCO Islamic World Heritage List

SHARJAH: The Islamic World Heritage List by ICESCO now includes three significant sites from Sharjah: Dibba Al Hisn Fort and Settlement, Fili Fort, and Wadi Shees, thanks to the efforts of the Sharjah Archaeology Authority (SAA) and the Authority for Initiatives Implementation and Infrastructure Development (Mubadara). According to Emirates News Agency, the inclusion of these sites was announced at the 12th meeting of ICESCO's Heritage Committee in Shusha, Azerbaijan, designated as the 2024 Islamic World Cultural Capital. This recognition underscores the cultural and historical importance of these locations which are integral in strengthening Islamic and human cultural identity and in preserving historical heritage for future generations. Dibba Al Hisn Fort, a prominent site in the list, has been a center for trade and cultural exchange for over five centuries. It houses artefacts from diverse regions such as China, India, and Europe, highlighting its role in regional commerce. Fili Fort, strategically posi tioned, has historically been crucial in safeguarding water resources and trade routes between Al Dhaid and Oman. This site is supported by the historic aflaj irrigation system, which is vital for the region's water management. Furthermore, Wadi Shees, known for its picturesque landscapes and environmental significance, features ancient irrigation systems and hosts rare wildlife species, making it a center of scientific interest. These sites not only reflect the rich heritage of Sharjah but also contribute to global heritage preservation. Eisa Yousif, Director-General of SAA, expressed gratitude towards H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, for his continuous support in heritage preservation. Yousif emphasized that these acknowledgments highlight Sharjah's ongoing commitment to maintaining its cultural identity and enhancing the global heritage community.
