BEIRUT: Israeli occupation forces have allegedly violated United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701 and international humanitarian law by deliberately targeting UN peacekeepers in Beirut, according to Andrea Tenenti, UNIFIL Spokesperson and Chief of Strategic Communications and Public Information. Tenenti made these remarks during a video press conference held in Geneva on Friday. According to Kuwait News Agency, Tenenti disclosed that Israeli forces conducted five separate attacks on UNIFIL sites, leading to multiple injuries among peacekeepers. He detailed an incident where Israeli forces entered a UNIFIL location, remaining for 45 minutes during which they destroyed cameras, communication systems, and intimidated peacekeepers taking refuge in bunkers with drones. Tenenti asserted the unwavering commitment of peacekeepers to their mission, despite the ongoing assaults. He highlighted the critical role of UNIFIL in maintaining stability in the region. Moreover, he emphasized that while UNIFIL field c ommanders have the right to self-defense in the face of actual threats, they have consistently chosen to act with restraint to prevent further escalation. Additionally, Tenenti underscored UNIFIL's initiatives aimed at de-escalating tensions, providing humanitarian aid, and ensuring the safe evacuation of civilians in the conflict-ridden area.
