Italy Pledges Efforts for Ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon, Commits to Humanitarian Aid

BEIRUT: Visiting Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced Italy's ongoing efforts to establish a permanent ceasefire in both the Gaza Strip and Lebanon, while also committing to humanitarian aid for the region. Meloni's statements came during a joint news conference with Lebanon's Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati, where discussions included strengthening the Lebanese army and securing international peacekeeping efforts. According to Kuwait News Agency, Prime Minister Meloni emphasized the importance of eliminating any military presence south of the Litani River, save for the Lebanese army and the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). She underscored the need to enhance the capabilities of the Lebanese security forces in collaboration with local authorities and reiterated Italy's condemnation of attacks on UNIFIL, advocating for the peacekeepers' mission to continue unimpeded. Meloni also addressed the humanitarian crisis exacerbated by recent military escalations, highlighting Italy' s swift approval of 70 million euros in humanitarian aid for displaced individuals in Lebanon. This assistance aims to alleviate the burdens faced by both the displaced and their host communities. During the meeting, Prime Minister Mikati expressed the historical ties between Lebanon and Italy, discussing shared interests in the Middle East. He emphasized that diplomacy should take precedence over conflict, urging adherence to international resolutions, particularly UN Security Council Resolution 1701. Mikati reaffirmed Lebanon's commitment to these resolutions and its intent to bolster the army's presence in the south in collaboration with UNIFIL. Mikati further expressed Lebanon's appreciation for Italy's significant contributions to UNIFIL, which he described as a testament to Italy's dedication to Lebanon's stability and territorial integrity. He condemned any threats or attacks on UNIFIL, viewing them as violations of international legitimacy. The discussions also included the urgency of electing a ne w Lebanese president to facilitate economic reforms and recovery, with international support. Meloni's visit, including discussions with Lebanon's parliament speaker Nabih Berri, also addressed the humanitarian situation caused by military confrontations, reaffirming Italy's support for its UNIFIL contingent.
