Beirut: Foreign Minister Youssef Raggi met with British Ambassador to Lebanon, Hamish Cowell, to discuss the political and economic situation in Lebanon and explore ways to enhance bilateral relations.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, the meeting focused on the escalating tensions in southern Lebanon amid ongoing Israeli actions and the anticipated renewal of the UNIFIL mandate. Both parties emphasized the importance of maintaining the role of the peacekeeping force in the region.
The talks also included discussions on the UK's assistance in securing Lebanon's eastern border with surveillance towers along the Syrian frontier. This cooperation aims to enhance border security and address cross-border challenges.
Minister Raggi expressed support for U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to lift sanctions on Syria, following mediation by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Raggi noted the potential positive impact on Lebanon, particularly regarding the return of Syrian refugees.
Additionally, Raggi met with MP Hagop Pakradounian to discuss recent domestic developments. Pakradounian highlighted the case of Lebanese-Armenian citizen Viken Oljikjian, who has been detained in Azerbaijan since November 2020, and urged continued efforts by the ministry to secure his release.
