Beirut: The European Union has unveiled a pound 12.5 million initiative aimed at supporting the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) in their efforts to lead recovery operations and enhance security in Southern Lebanon. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) will implement this project, focusing on helping communities rebuild after the ongoing impact of a 13-month conflict.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, the official launch ceremony took place at the LAF Headquarters in Yarzeh and was attended by high-profile figures, including LAF Commander General Rodolph Haykal, EU Ambassador to Lebanon Sandra De Waele, UNDP Resident Representative in Lebanon Blerta Aliko, and representatives from UNSCOL. This EU-funded project is a response to the prolonged conflict, which has severely affected lives and infrastructure across Lebanon.
The initiative is designed to aid the Lebanese Armed Forces in supporting communities in Southern Lebanon to recover and rebuild. The project encompasses activities such as clearing debris and unexploded ordnance, repairing essential infrastructure like water networks and public health centers, and boosting cooperation with local communities.
General Rodolphe Haykal emphasized the significance of the project, noting its role as a critical milestone for the military institution. He highlighted the army's ongoing efforts to uphold state authority, implement international resolutions, and ensure security across the nation. The project aims to enhance the army's capacity and sustainability, contributing to Lebanon's overall security and stability.
EU Ambassador Sandra De Waele reiterated the European Union's commitment to Lebanon, stating that the project reflects the EU's dedication to promoting peace and stability. The EU, in cooperation with its member states, is providing over $600 million to support conflict-affected areas in Lebanon. These efforts align with diplomatic initiatives to ensure the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701 and adherence to the November 2024 ceasefire agreement.
Blerta Aliko, UNDP Resident Representative in Lebanon, affirmed the organization's continued support for the LAF and local communities, emphasizing that stability is crucial for achieving lasting peace, recovery, and inclusive development. The project is part of a Tripartite Memorandum of Understanding signed in May 2025 by the Ministry of National Defense, UNDP, and UNSCOL, aimed at coordinating international assistance for the Lebanese Armed Forces.
