Beirut: Minister of Justice, Adel Nassar, congratulated the Lebanese people on the achievements they had long awaited, most notably the law on judicial independence and judicial formations. He indicated that these were a key part of the promises he made upon assuming his duties at the Justice Ministry, being fundamental steps toward building a fortified judiciary, combating corruption, and achieving a more just society.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, Nassar's words came during a press conference held at his ministerial office. Touching on the Beirut port explosion commemoration, he revealed that the judicial investigator, Judge Tarek Bitar, has reached the final stages and is close to completing his judicial report, after having made significant progress in gathering the required information.
Nassar affirmed that there would be no retreat in this regard, "because there can be no sovereign state without access to the truth and accountability." He stressed the state's obligation to ensure a judiciary that responds to the questions raised, leading to judicial accountability, in accordance with the law and all legal principles, while respecting the right to defense.
Regarding the issue of weapons, the Minister of Justice reiterated his full support for the position expressed by His Excellency the President of the Republic, emphasizing that a state cannot be complete with weapons being outside its authority. He stated that illegal weapons, regardless of any external considerations or local slogans, no longer constitute an element of strength or protection, but instead pose a threat to internal stability and open the door to security, economic, and diplomatic disasters for which all Lebanese pay the price.
Nassar concluded by reaffirming the Ministry of Justice's commitment to achieving justice and further achievements, saying: "From the port explosion to judicial independence and illegitimate weapons, we reaffirm our unequivocal commitment to building a just and sovereign state in which there is no compromise on the truth and no settlement at the expense of the law."
