Beirut: A cultural and musical evening aimed at saving heritage sites in Tripoli was hosted by the Patrimoine Tripoli - Liban association on August 18, 2025. The event took place on Abdul Wahab Island, off the coast of El Mina - Tripoli, under the patronage of His Excellency Mr. Fayez Rasamny, Lebanon's Minister of Public Works and Transport, and in collaboration with El Mina Municipality. The evening was designed to revive awareness of the island's deteriorated condition and to raise funds for the restoration of Dar Fatima, a historic house in Tripoli's old souks.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, Mr. Fayez Rasamny emphasized the significance of Tripoli and the North for Lebanon, stating, "the government's goal is to achieve balanced development across all Lebanese regions, especially in the North, which possesses significant potential and capabilities for growth." He highlighted that this development would lead to increased job opportunities and improved living conditions for the people.
In her speech, Mrs. Joumana Chahal Timery, President of Patrimoine Tripoli - Liban association, stated that the association aims to implement sustainable development projects that highlight Tripoli's historical and cultural value, as well as its tourism and economic potential. The event underscored the association's mission to place Tripoli on the national map.
Abdul Wahab Island, also known as 'Cow Island,' is a significant part of Tripoli's maritime history. The island features historical remains like the ruins of Saint Thomas Monastery from the Crusader period. Its diverse ecosystem, which includes rare wild plants, endangered sea turtles, and migratory birds, contributes to its environmental significance. Despite its historical and ecological value, the island has faced neglect, with deteriorating infrastructure and waste accumulation.
The event on August 18 sought to mobilize the local community and authorities to protect Abdul Wahab Island and secure funds for renovating Dar Fatima. The evening featured a charity dinner and an open-air concert, transforming the island into a space that celebrated its heritage. This initiative aimed to reconnect the community with its maritime heritage and promote sustainable development and eco-tourism.
Since its establishment in Paris in 2009, Patrimoine Tripoli - Liban has been committed to preserving Tripoli's heritage. The association has led restoration projects and engaged the public in heritage conservation. The August 18 event embodied this vision, combining culture and community engagement, and highlighted the importance of collective involvement in heritage preservation.
