Beirut: Industry Minister Joe Issa El Khoury emphasized the need to move away from a culture of war and embrace peace and development in Lebanon. He highlighted that restricting arms to the Lebanese army is a significant obstacle to economic development, expressing regret over delays in implementing this step, which hinders investment despite interest from Lebanon's friends, international institutions, and expatriates.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, Issa El Khoury spoke during a panel discussion titled "Entrepreneurship and Defining a New Economic System in Lebanon," part of the "Path to Statehood" conference by the Lebanese National Congress. He pointed out the global integration of the Lebanese people, spread across more than 130 countries, and stressed the importance of building international friendships and openness politically and investment-wise.
The Minister noted the potential of over 15 million expatriates of Lebanese descent to engage in investment in Lebanon's financial and economic sectors. He criticized the electoral isolation of the Lebanese Diaspora, emphasizing their vital connection to their roots and advocating for their electoral inclusion.
Issa El-Khoury also discussed the importance of automation in government administration, highlighting its role in reducing corruption and facilitating information access. He mentioned ongoing discussions with the Economy and Trade Minister to develop a "One Stop Shop" concept for investors and noted the digital identity project, expected to be widely implemented in two years.
The Minister underscored the private sector's critical role in economic development and called for the state to protect vulnerable citizens, ensuring access to essential services. He concluded by urging a shift from a culture of war to one of peace, work, and development, prioritizing Lebanon's national interests and strengthening national belonging.
