Upper chouf: A new agricultural, environmental, and eco-tourism complex has been inaugurated in Upper Chouf, Mount Lebanon, to boost local agricultural production, expand market access for small farmers and cooperatives, and promote sustainable rural eco-tourism.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, 'Souk El Jabal' has been established by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in partnership with the Union of Chouf El Sweijani Municipalities, with funding from the Government of Germany through KfW Development Bank. The initiative aims to revitalize livelihoods and strengthen the rural economy in the Chouf region.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by H.E. Dr. Nizar Hani, Minister of Agriculture; Mr. Kamel Al Ghossaini, Head of the Union of Chouf El Sweijani Municipalities; Dr. Solveig Buhl, KfW Director in Lebanon; Ms. Blerta Aliko, UNDP Resident Representative; and local farmers and cooperatives.
The complex features a central wholesale vegetable market, agro-food and beekeeping shops, training facilities, a community kitchen, and administrative offices. It is set to benefit over 270 farmers, 400 beekeepers, and 40 agro-food producers across 30 communities in the region, while also creating sustainable income opportunities for 50 women operating the community kitchen.
Dr. Nizar Hani, Minister of Agriculture, noted the complex as a success story and a key pillar of the new Agricultural Strategy 2026-2035. He emphasized its role in expanding this model across Lebanese regions, serving as a crucial link between farmers and markets.
Mr. Kamel Al Ghossaini highlighted the project as a long-term investment in people, acknowledging the challenges but expressing optimism about the opportunities and hope it brings. He stressed the importance of cooperation and commitment to the project's success.
Dr. Solveig Buhl remarked on the project's embodiment of inclusive local development, sustainable management, and community empowerment. She acknowledged the German Government's financial support through KfW, reinforcing its commitment to Lebanon's rural communities.
Blerta Aliko, UNDP Resident Representative, reiterated UNDP's commitment to delivering solutions that meet the needs of farming communities. She highlighted farmers as the backbone of local economies in rural Lebanon.
The initiative also encourages collaboration with public and private institutions, including the Ministry of Agriculture, the Lebanese Agricultural Research Institute (LARI), and local agricultural schools, to provide technical guidance and continuous support to farmers, cooperatives, and traders.
By enhancing market access, reducing transportation costs, supporting women's economic participation, and promoting eco-tourism activities, 'Souk El Jabal' represents a significant step towards revitalizing local economies and leveraging rural potential for sustainable growth.
