Beirut: House Speaker Nabih Berri held a series of meetings on Thursday to discuss significant issues such as human rights, refugee support, and reconstruction efforts, focusing on strengthening Lebanon's international relations and cooperation.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, Berri first met with EU Special Representative for Human Rights Kajsa Ollongren, who was accompanied by EU Ambassador Sandra De Waele. The discussions centered around recent developments and the potential for enhanced collaboration between Lebanon and the European Union in promoting human rights.
In another meeting, Berri welcomed Karolina Lindholm Billing, the newly appointed UNHCR Representative in Lebanon, marking the beginning of her mandate. The discussions revolved around the UNHCR's support programs for those affected by Israeli attacks and the complex issue of repatriating Syrian refugees.
Additionally, in a farewell visit, Berri met with Japan's Ambassador Magoshi Masayuki. Their talks touched on regional developments and the status of Lebanese-Japanese relations, reflecting on the broader geopolitical context.
Earlier in the day, Berri engaged with Ousmane Dione, the World Bank's Vice President for the Middle East and North Africa, alongside regional officials Jean-Christophe Carret, Enrique Blanco Armas, and Berri's media adviser Ali Hamdan. The focus of this meeting was Lebanon's cooperation programs with the World Bank, particularly concerning reconstruction initiatives.
