Beirut: Speaker of the House, Nabih Berri, on Wednesday welcomed the American Task Force for Lebanon (ATFL) delegation at Ain al-Tineh, accompanied by U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon Michael Issa and a group of experts from Washington. The discussions centered on Lebanon's political and security developments, as well as regional dynamics.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, following the meeting that lasted over an hour, Ambassador Issa expressed gratitude to Berri for providing the delegation with a direct understanding of the Lebanese situation, acknowledging that the perception in the U.S. often differs from the actual situation on the ground. Issa highlighted Berri's communication of key messages to the delegation and advised against premature judgments on negotiations, specifically mentioning the appointment of Ambassador Simon Karam to the 'mechanism' committee.
Issa reiterated the U.S. commitment to military assistance for the Lebanese Army and mentioned ongoing efforts to arrange a visit to Washington for Army Commander Gen. Rodolphe Haykal. He also expressed optimism that the government would officially affirm the Army's authority south of the Litani River.
ATFL President Ambassador Edward Gabriel characterized the meeting as productive, noting that the delegation is evaluating Lebanon's regional positioning to inform the U.S. Congress.
In addition to the delegation's visit, Speaker Berri met with Regie Director General Nassif Seklawi, who invited Berri to the company's 90th-anniversary celebration. Seklawi reported that Regie's revenues could increase by 20% in 2025, potentially reaching USD 500 million.
