Beirut: The Kataeb's Political Bureau convened for its weekly meeting, chaired by party leader Samy Gemayel, to discuss recent political and security developments. The meeting resulted in a statement addressing concerns over Iranian officials' remarks and their implications for Lebanon's sovereignty.
According to National news agency - Lebanon, the Kataeb's Political Bureau expressed strong condemnation of Iranian statements referencing 'support for resistance forces on front-line battlefields.' The party views these remarks as a clear indication of ongoing efforts to undermine the Lebanese State's authority over decisions regarding war and peace. The bureau highlighted the adverse impact of illegal weapons used in regional proxy conflicts on the Lebanese people, compromising their security and future.
The bureau reiterated the importance of placing all weapons under the control of the Lebanese Armed Forces and legitimate security agencies. It emphasized the need for Lebanon to remain neutral in regional power struggles and adhere to the Constitution, the 1949 Armistice Agreement, the Taif Agreement, and relevant international resolutions.
The Kataeb Party also addressed attempts by certain parties to misrepresent its position on negotiations with the Syrian state, which were falsely portrayed as targeting the Sunni community. The bureau stressed that the Minister of Justice's stance is legally grounded, respecting the judiciary's independence. The party called for clearly defined relations between Lebanon and Syria, based on equality and mutual respect, while insisting on the arrest of Habib Chartouni and disclosure of the fate of Lebanese citizens missing in Syrian prisons.
In addition, the Kataeb Party condemned the recent attack in Sydney, Australia, which resulted in civilian casualties. The party expressed solidarity with the Australian people and victims' families, reiterating its rejection of violence against civilians and acts undermining security and stability. It called for increased international cooperation to combat violence, extremism, and hate speech, safeguarding societies from threats to peace and security.
