New york: Ambassador Jamal Fares Al Rowaiei, Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Bahrain to the United Nations, participated in a briefing to the United Nations Security Council by the International Criminal Court (ICC) on the situation in Darfur, presented by Nazhat Khan, Deputy Prosecutor of the ICC.
According to Bahrain News Agency, Ambassador Al Rowaiei delivered a statement highlighting Bahrain's call for intensified efforts to secure an immediate ceasefire and an urgent political solution to the conflict in Sudan. The statement emphasized the need for dialogue and diplomacy to preserve Sudan's unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity while meeting the aspirations of the Sudanese people for peace, stability, development, and prosperity.
The ambassador expressed Bahrain's deep concern over the worsening humanitarian situation in Darfur, marked by escalating security issues resulting in numerous civilian casualties, infrastructure destruction, and severe deteriorations in living conditions. This situation, he noted, contravenes international humanitarian and human rights laws.
The statement stressed the necessity of a comprehensive approach addressing both humanitarian and legal aspects, underscoring respect for Sudan's judicial sovereignty. It highlighted the principle of complementarity in the Rome Statute, which assigns the primary role to national judicial authorities while the ICC plays a supportive role.
Furthermore, the statement referenced the cooperation between the ICC and the Sudanese government, established under a memorandum of understanding signed on August 12, 2021. It stressed the importance of this cooperation in strengthening Sudanese national institutions without compromising their jurisdiction and central ownership of the judicial process.
