Beirut: President of the Republic Joseph Aoun, in commemoration of the 44th anniversary of President-elect Bashir Gemayel's assassination, emphasized that Gemayel's message continues to influence Lebanon's national journey. "On September 14 every year, Lebanon marks one of the major milestones in its national memory, recalling the image of President-elect Bashir Gemayel, who was killed in an act of treachery before assuming his constitutional duties. He became a martyr for the homeland, his name forever engraved in the Lebanese consciousness as a symbol of faith in Lebanon as a country of pluralism, sovereignty and freedom," Aoun stated.
According to National news agency - Lebanon, President Aoun highlighted Gemayel's unwavering belief in Lebanon as a unified entity. Gemayel's slogan, "Lebanon, 10,452 square kilometers," signified an inclusive national vision where Lebanon's geography and territory are seen as the indivisible and final homeland for all citizens, without segregation or exclusion.
Aoun further noted that as Lebanon commemorates Gemayel's martyrdom anniversary, it remains essential to uphold the unity of the land, people, and institutions as a tribute to those who sacrificed their lives for the nation. He reiterated the commitment to building a strong and just state, ensuring Lebanon's independence, sovereignty, and the dignity of its citizens.
The president concluded by honoring Lebanon's martyrs, expressing wishes for the nation to always enjoy pride and dignity.
