Qobayat:Beirut Agriculture Minister Dr. Nizar Hani recently met with a delegation from Qobayat Municipality, led by Deputy Mayor Dr. Mirna Karam and accompanied by MP Jimmy Jabbour, to discuss initiatives aimed at forest protection and sustainable management.
According to National news agency - Lebanon, the Ministry of Agriculture has announced a memorandum of understanding with Qobayat Municipality, represented by Mayor Michel Abdo Abdo. This agreement establishes a comprehensive framework for managing the Qobayat Forest, aimed at reducing wildfire risks, preserving biodiversity, and ensuring natural regeneration.
The agreement details a phased management approach that includes selective pruning, thinning, clearing dry branches, and removing forest debris under the technical supervision of the ministry. Municipal workers will carry out these measures upon obtaining the necessary permits, with oversight from a relevant forestry center to ensure adherence to environmental and technical standards. Each phase of the plan will require approval from the ministry before proceeding.
Furthermore, the agreement strictly prohibits indiscriminate tree cutting, the construction of new roads, burning of debris, and charcoal production within the designated area. It also sets regulations for handling collected firewood in line with legal requirements.
The Ministry emphasized that this initiative serves as a model for cooperation between central and local authorities, enhancing municipal capabilities to prevent wildfires, protect forest ecosystems, and preserve Lebanon's natural heritage for future generations.
