Maronite Patriarch Al-Rahi Urges Lebanon to Avoid New Conflict

Bkerke:Maronite Patriarch Cardinal Bechara Boutros al-Rahi has called for Lebanon to steer clear of another war, emphasizing the country's inability to endure further conflict. Speaking during his Sunday homily at the patriarchal see in Bkerke, al-Rahi highlighted the importance of safeguarding Lebanon from wars that extend beyond its borders and the interests of its people.

According to National news agency - Lebanon, al-Rahi stressed that decisions of war and peace must remain a national responsibility, warning against fragmented decision-making authorities. He called for peace that protects human dignity and national sovereignty while rejecting war that brings destruction, displacement, and tragedy.

Al-Rahi also advocated for unified decision-making, with weapons placed exclusively under the state's authority, describing these as essential for sovereignty, stability, and national security. Addressing border security, he cautioned against attempts to smuggle weapons, citing a recent truck incident in Dahr al-Baydar, and expressed concern over land purchases exploiting Lebanon's economic hardships.

On economic issues, al-Rahi pointed to rising living costs as an urgent priority, criticizing the pressure on salaries and the burden of taxes. He emphasized that the state should be measured by the services and protection it provides, not merely by its revenue collection.

In conclusion, al-Rahi called for a solid foundation in Lebanon, built on one law, unified decisions, protected borders, and functioning institutions, asserting that sovereignty cannot be divided and serving the people must remain a primary priority.
