AI Revolutionizes Tuberculosis Screening at Capital Health Screening Centre

ABU DHABI: M42’s Capital Health Screening Centre (CHSC) has implemented a groundbreaking AI-assisted technology, AIRIS-TB, increasing its capacity to perform chest X-rays to 2,000 daily, a significant enhancement aimed at improving tuberculosis (TB) screening efficiency.

According to Emirates News Agency, the AIRIS-TB system was introduced in May 2024 and has since enabled CHSC to increase its screening capacity tenfold compared to traditional methods. This innovation is part of a broader initiative supported by the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi and the Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre, which focuses on integrating AI to streamline TB diagnostics while adhering to rigorous regulatory standards.

The AI-powered system distinguishes between normal and abnormal X-rays with a high sensitivity of 99.73 percent, flagging potential abnormalities for further evaluation by radiologists. This capability not only speeds up the diagnosis process but also reduces the radiologists’ workload by 37 percent, allowing them t
o focus on more complex cases.

Ali Al Saffar, CEO of CHSC, highlighted the system’s efficiency, stating, “With AIRIS-TB’s assistance, the manual workload for radiologists has been significantly reduced, setting new benchmarks in early detection and treatment of TB.” He also noted the system’s potential for future applications in detecting other diseases, such as lung cancer and pneumonia.

Dr. Andrew Jeremijenko, Medical Director at CHSC, emphasized the broader implications of the AI model, suggesting its adaptability to other medical conditions, which represents a significant step towards leveraging AI in healthcare diagnostics more extensively.

M42’s deployment of AI in TB screening not only enhances diagnostic capabilities at CHSC but also positions the centre as a leader in medical AI innovation, demonstrating the transformative impact of advanced technologies in addressing global health challenges.
