Arab human rights panel urges concerted response to societal perils

Chairman of the Arab Permanent Human Rights Committee (AHRC) Talal Al-Mutairi underlined on Sunday that it is essential to coordinate and unify Arab efforts to address threats to the society, family and common sense by legal, political, diplomatic and media means.

Al-Mutairi, who is Kuwaiti Assistant Foreign Minister for Human Rights, made the remark while addressing the 52nd session of the committee, with member states' concerned bodies, human rights agencies and nongovernmental organizations attending.

He said that today's gathering marks 55 years since the AHRC was launched, urging its members to take it upon themselves to review terms of references, retain gains, coordinate stances, prop up partnerships, ensure unity and address challenges.

He added that the meeting also came as settlers carried on breaking into Al-Aqsa Mosque, aggressions on Palestinian villages continued, religious hatred alarmingly mounted and children's sanctity was still in jeopardy.

He emphasized that amid the current serious threats and challenges, it is imperative to unify ranks and move in an orderly and coordinative way and lead an international initiative to put forward draft resolutions that would serve the region's priorities and interests.

He underscored that Palestine has always been the prime priority of the Arab world, calling on the occupation force to put an end to its occupation of Palestinian territories and to release all Palestinian prisoners immediately.

"This is the voice of wisdom, the voice of logic and the voice of international law," Al-Mutairi said, calling for ensuring accountability, stopping impunity and blatant defiance of international legitimacy.

Furthermore, the Arab human rights panel's chief strongly condemned the desecration of the Holy Quran in the West as a disgraceful and provocative act and unacceptable behavior.

On the other hand, Al-Mutairi spoke highly of Oman's recent joining of the Arab Charter on Human Rights as a wise decision and qualitative addition to this referential document.

For her part, Assistant Secretary-General of the Arab League for Social Affairs Haifa Abu Ghazala addressed the gathering by stressing that hard work is the sole way out of varied and delicate human rights challenges.

She added that the Palestinian people are being denied their lands, humanity and simple human rights, while holy books are burnt and desecrated day and night under the pretext of freedom of expression.

She underlined that it is necessary for the Arab world to address all these challenges by means of stepping up efforts, unifying ranks and promoting cooperation and togetherness and as well as attaching more significance to training and capacity-building.
