Cairo: The Secretary-General of the Arab League, Nabil Fahmy, affirmed on Monday that the Palestinian cause will remain at the forefront of the League's priorities, Palestine News and Info Agency (WAFA) reported. "We will continue to defend the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people and work towards ending the occupation," he said during his first press conference at the General Secretariat headquarters in Cairo, Egypt.
According to Nam News Network, Fahmy stressed that "the city of Jerusalem will remain at the forefront of our focus in the face of every attempt to alter its status or erase its Arab identity." He added that "what Israel is committing in Gaza and the West Bank is an ongoing crime of genocide, which demands a steadfast Arab stance and action commensurate with the scale of historical responsibility."
"We will support the legal prosecution of its perpetrators, for genocide is not subject to a statute of limitations, and those who commit it today will stand before justice tomorrow," he said. The Secretary-General noted that Israeli attacks were not limited to the Palestinian territories but also extended to Lebanon through continued attacks and violations in Beirut and southern Lebanon, representing a blatant breach of Lebanese sovereignty and international law.
He also highlighted the continued occupation of the Syrian Golan Heights in defiance of international legitimacy resolutions, reaffirming the League's rejection of any attempts to impose a fait accompli by force. Fahmy added that "the Arab region stands before a critical phase that necessitates adopting more vigilant and proactive Arab action based on protecting Arab interests and safeguarding the region's capabilities."
He said addressing the Arab world's issues must stem from a purely Arab will and that only what is agreed upon by Arabs is capable of achieving sustainability.
