AUB Medical Center Attracts Top Talent from Harvard and MD Anderson

Beirut: The American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC) is furthering its commitment to healthcare excellence with the appointment of two esteemed physician-scientists, Dr. Osama Mohamad and Dr. Haytham Kaafarani, as department chairs within its Faculty of Medicine.

According to National News Agency - Lebanon, these appointments followed rigorous international searches, selecting Dr. Mohamad and Dr. Kaafarani for their extensive global expertise. Both bring experience from prestigious institutions, MD Anderson Cancer Center and Harvard Medical School, which will enhance clinical practice, education, and research in Lebanon and the region.

Dr. Osama Mohamad, an alumnus of AUB, is now the chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology. His background includes significant tenures at the University of California, San Francisco, and the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Dr. Mohamad is renowned for his work in radiation oncology, especially his pioneering efforts in the application of AI in oncology and advanced radiation therapy. His leadership at MD Anderson involved expanding the High-Dose-Rate Prostate Brachytherapy program and serving in key roles within the Genitourinary Center and Prostate Cancer Center of Excellence.

Dr. Haytham Kaafarani, also an AUB alumnus, now chairs the Department of Surgery and serves as assistant dean for surgical sciences and research. With a decade of leadership at Harvard Medical School and Mass General Brigham, Dr. Kaafarani is a global authority in surgical critical care and patient safety. His previous roles include trauma medical director at Massachusetts General Hospital and chief patient safety officer of the Joint Commission. He has significantly contributed to improving surgical care through the application of AI and machine learning.

The appointments of Dr. Mohamad and Dr. Kaafarani underscore AUBMC's dedication to advancing medical excellence and innovation, strengthening Lebanon's position as a regional leader in healthcare.
