Beirut: In a message to the American University of Beirut (AUB) community, President Fadlo Khuri addressed reports of threats against American universities in the region, reaffirming the university's commitment to the safety of its community and the continuity of its operations and mission. According to National News Agency - Lebanon, Khuri stated, "I hope you are safe under these difficult circumstances. Like many of you, we learned early this morning of threats issued against American universities in the region. We have been looking into these reports diligently and gathering facts amidst the many rumors circulating on media outlets. Please rely only on official communications from the university for updates." He added that there is currently no evidence of direct threats against AUB's campuses or medical centers. However, as a precautionary measure, the university will shift to full remote operations on Monday and Tuesday, with essential personnel being the only exception. Consequently, no instructional activities or exams will take place on campus during these two days. Khuri emphasized that the safety of the university community and those they serve remains the highest priority. Khuri further reiterated the university's core values and mission, underscoring its long-standing tradition as an independent and inclusive educational institution. He highlighted AUB's 160-year legacy of empowering and welcoming individuals from diverse backgrounds and affirmed the institution's dedication to treating and healing people regardless of their circumstances. Reflecting on his personal values, Khuri expressed his opposition to violence and urged for the protection of educational and health institutions worldwide. He invoked the principles exemplified by Mahatma Gandhi, advocating for peaceful self-determination and calling for the exemption of educational and healthcare institutions from conflicts. Khuri concluded by reaffirming AUB's unwavering commitment to its mission of teaching, healing, and serving the less fo rtunate, stating that the university will not be deterred by threats or violence at any point.
