Chouf: Head of the “Free Patriotic Movement,” MP Gebran Bassil, embarked on a tour of the Chouf district starting with a visit to the “Saint George Monastery” in Naameh, where he was warmly received by the Monastery’s head and the local residents. Accompanying Bassil were MPs Ghassan Atallah, Farid Al-Bustani, and FPM’s vice presidents for political and administrative affairs, Martine Najm Kteily and Ghassan Khoury. Bassil expressed his pleasure at visiting the historical site, emphasizing the role of faith and the Church in maintaining a connection to the homeland and preserving presence in the region despite past hardships.
According to National News Agency – Lebanon, Bassil highlighted the migration issue faced by many Lebanese due to unfavorable circumstances in the country, stressing the importance of connecting the diaspora to their roots. He urged for proper representation of the diaspora in parliamentary matters, akin to the representation of towns by mayors and local representatives.
Bassil commended the “Saint George Monastery” for its support to the community, particularly during times of conflict. Citing the Monastery as a symbol of resilience, he reinforced the idea of a shared cause and faith that keeps the community unshaken.
In Damour, Bassil visited the municipal building, emphasizing the importance of preventing land sales and fostering coexistence. He acknowledged Damour’s historical sacrifices during the war and its significant role in peace times. His tour continued with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Damour Martyrs’ Monument and the unveiling of a commemorative plaque at the Free Patriotic Movement’s office, celebrating its 25th anniversary.
At a luncheon in his honor at the “Al-Jisr” restaurant, Bassil engaged with supporters, reflecting on their past challenges and aspirations. He recalled President Michel Aoun’s establishment of the “Center for Dialogue Among Civilizations” in Damour, underscoring its international significance and its role in fostering dialogue following past conflicts.
Bassil articulated that the success or failure of dialogue in Damour reflects on Lebanon as a whole. He urged for continued focus on dialogue and resilience, expressing hope that President Joseph Aoun would prioritize the Center for Dialogue of Civilizations.
Emphasizing the preservation of national unity through genuine reconciliation, Bassil concluded his visit at the Sacred Hearts School theater, reiterating his joy in visiting Damour, a town symbolizing resilience and history.
