Borrell Urges Ceasefire and Presidential Election Amid Lebanon Crisis

BRUSSELS: European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, has reinforced the EU's call for an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon and urged for the swift election of a president, amid escalating tensions in the region. Borrell's remarks followed a phone conversation with Nabih Berri, the Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, highlighting the critical need to restore and uphold Lebanese sovereignty. According to Kuwait News Agency, Borrell expressed concerns about the evolving political landscape in Lebanon, which he described as fraught with potential dangers. He outlined a comprehensive five-step plan aimed at stabilizing the country. The plan prioritizes an immediate ceasefire and the rapid election of a president, alongside the implementation of United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Resolution 1701. This resolution includes the exclusive deployment of Lebanese Army Forces in the south and a strengthened mandate for the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). Borrell stressed the urgency of delivering essential humanitarian aid as part of this strategy. In his communication, Borrell emphasized that respect for Lebanon's sovereignty remains non-negotiable. He noted that the upcoming Paris conference on Lebanon, scheduled for next week, presents a crucial platform for the international community to demonstrate solidarity with the Lebanese people, offering a chance to coordinate efforts in addressing the crisis.
