Beirut: During its session yesterday at the Grand Serail, the Council of Ministers assigned the Ministry of Justice to examine possible legal avenues for prosecuting Israel over its repeated attacks against journalists, particularly the killing of reporter Issam Abdallah and his colleagues while on duty.
According to National News Agency – Lebanon, the proposal was initiated by Minister of Information, Paul Morcos, on the anniversary of Abdallah’s death, outside the agenda, and was endorsed by President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, receiving unanimous cabinet approval.
The decision was based on a proposal submitted by Minister Morcos, in reference to Cabinet Resolution No. 1 (April 26, 2024) concerning the Dutch Organization for Applied Scientific Research report on Abdallah’s killing. Additionally, Resolution No. 38 (May 28, 2024), instructed the Foreign Ministry to attach that report to Lebanon’s complaint before the United Nations.
This move underscores the Lebanese government’s commitment to seeking justice for journalists who have been victims of violence, and highlights ongoing tensions in the region regarding press freedom and accountability.
