China’s Generative AI User Base Exceeds 600 Million, Industry Sees Robust Expansion

Beijing: China now boasts over 600 million registered users for generative artificial intelligence (AI) services, a significant milestone that underscores the rapid growth of this technology sector in the nation, according to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).

According to Emirates News Agency, Zhao Zhiguo, the chief engineer at the MIIT, highlighted the expansion of China’s core AI industry, which now encompasses over 4,500 companies. Zhao also pointed out that there are currently nearly 200 generative AI service models that are registered and available for public use. He emphasized the critical need to boost the capacity of AI infrastructure to cater to public services and to establish platforms that are accessible, adaptable, and highly available for AI development. This effort is aimed at accelerating the training, optimization, and large-scale application of AI models.

Additionally, there is a push to enhance the supply capability of computing power facilities and to build a un
ified national computing system. This would increase the share of intelligent computing resources, Zhao noted.

Further developments include the launch of an evaluation standard for general AI large models by China Mobile, in collaboration with the China Electronics Standardization Institute and 16 key enterprises. This new standard is designed to aid companies in selecting high-quality AI models and is based on actual demand from key industries. It evaluates six critical dimensions of AI applications: functionality, accuracy, reliability, safety, interactivity, and applicability, covering a variety of industry scenarios such as telecommunications, transportation, energy, and manufacturing.
