Dozens Killed in Sudan Gold Mine Collapse

Atbara: Several miners were killed when a gold mine collapsed in the Howaid desert area, located between the cities of Atbara and Haya, northeastern Sudan, according to Russia Today.

According to National News Agency - Lebanon, Sudanese media reported that the accident occurred when massive amounts of sand and rocks collapsed on workers prospecting for gold in a primitive mine in an area known for its intense unregulated mining activity.

Dozens of bodies were recovered from the rubble, amid primitive and slow rescue operations due to the absence of heavy equipment and specialized personnel.
