Egypt summons Danish envoy over desecrating Holy Quran

Egypt's Foreign Ministry summoned Thursday Danish Ambassador and inform her about the country's "strong resentment and condemnation" of burning copies of the Holy Quran in front of foreign diplomatic missions in Denmark.

In a statement, the Ministry affirmed Egypt's firm stance calling for taking "tangible" measures by authorities in Denmark and other countries, which witnessed similar incidents, to halt such "sorrowful" acts.

The Ministry said that these measures should be consistent with the condemnation by the governments of Denmark and other countries of burning the Holy Quran, it noted.

Continuing these regretful acts, which have nothing to do with freedom of expression, is a blatant violation of freedom of belief, and religious practices and runs counter to all international charters, it added.

In addition, the ministry indicated that such acts fuel speech of hatred, extremism and islamophobia as well as contempt of religions, the statement stated.

Egypt reiterated that the acts of burning the Holy Quran "categorically contradict efforts to enhance civilized and religious communication among the peoples of the world of different religions, beliefs and cultures, it elaborated.

The Ministry warned against repeating such incidents which have abhorrent repercussions, it pointed out.

It referred to burning the Holy Quran in front of its embassy in Copenhagen Tuesday, as a claim to deliver a message of defending freedom of expression by continuing demonstrating in front of the embassies of Arab and Islamic countries in Denmark.
