Chisinau: The European Union (EU) has expressed its support for the results of the constitutional referendum in Moldova, commending the Moldovan people for their aspiration to solidify their future within the European Union. The EU highlighted its intent to monitor the upcoming second round of the presidential election on November 3 and the approach to the parliamentary elections scheduled for 2025.
According to Kuwait News Agency, the initial phase of the presidential elections and the constitutional referendum regarding Moldova’s accession to the EU were conducted on October 20. The OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) International Election Observation Mission reported that both electoral events were well-managed. The campaigning period was marked by freedom for contestants, although it occurred under the shadow of concerns regarding illicit foreign interference and robust disinformation campaigns.
The EU has observed various declarations from law enforcement, international st
akeholders, and civil society groups pointing out that Moldova has been experiencing a ‘hybrid war’ led from abroad. This includes a mix of manipulative interferences aimed at destabilizing the nation, illicit financing of political figures, widespread disinformation efforts, and cyberattacks.
In a stern accusation, the EU has named “Russia and its proxies” as the main actors attempting to compromise the democratic and electoral processes in Moldova. The EU praised the Moldovan authorities for their adept handling of the election and referendum, under such challenging circumstances.
In its statement, the EU reaffirmed its dedication to support Moldova’s democratic progress, comprehensive reforms, and economic development. It also emphasized on strengthening Moldova’s resilience, particularly in its journey towards integration with the EU, asserting a shared vision for a common future with Moldova.
