European Peace Facility Supports Lebanese Armed Forces with £60 Million Assistance

Beirut: The Council has adopted a third assistance measure under the European Peace Facility (EPF), allocating £60 million to support the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF). This strategic move aims to bolster the LAF's capacity to maintain stability and security in the South of Litani Sector, aligning with UN Security Council Resolution 1701.

According to National News Agency - Lebanon, the assistance will significantly enhance the LAF's operational capabilities, contributing to both national and regional stability. This support is crucial for enabling displaced civilians to return to their homes safely. The measure underscores the EU's strong commitment to supporting Lebanese state institutions and renewing the EU-Lebanon partnership during a pivotal time for the ceasefire agreement between Lebanon and Israel.

The decision reflects the EU's dedication to reinforcing the LAF's capacity to redeploy in the South of Litani Sector. This initiative is essential following the 60-day ceasefire agreement established on 27 November 2024. The LAF's redeployment is vital for sustaining international efforts towards a lasting ceasefire and fulfilling UNSCR 1701. As the primary guarantors, alongside the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), the LAF play a critical role in establishing the security conditions necessary for restoring stability to the region.
