Two people were killed and half a million people were affected by floods in north eastern Indian state of Assam, according to India’s national radio.
The All India Radio reported that two people lost their lives and half a million people were affected by floods that hit 22 out of 31 districts in Assam following incessant rains.
Around 14,000 people were put into shelter homes in different districts. Bajali, Nalbari, Barpeta, Lakhimpur, Baksa, Tamulpur, Darrang, Kokrajhar are the worst hit districts, it said.
Incessant rain and resultant flooding has caused damage to infrastructure including houses, roads, and embankments. Agricultural lands are inundated causing huge damage to crops and major rivers are flowing above the danger level, it added.
India Meteorological Department warned that the rain will continue in the coming days. National Disaster Response Force and the State Disaster Response Force along with the police are engaged on releif and rescue operations in the affected areas.
