Gaza Reconstruction Faces Eight-Decade Timeline Due to Unprecedented Destruction

Gaza: The United Nations housing expert has projected an extensive timeline for the reconstruction of Gaza, indicating that the process could stretch over eight decades due to severe destruction inflicted since the onset of hostilities last year. The expert highlighted the magnitude of devastation, which has surpassed levels seen in other global conflict zones. According to Maan News Agency, Balakrishnan Rajagopal, the UN's independent investigator on the right to adequate housing, described the scale of destruction in Gaza as unparalleled. Rajagopal reported that by January 2024, a staggering 60% to 70% of homes in Gaza had been obliterated, with northern Gaza experiencing an even grimmer scenario of 82% home destruction. He noted that the situation has since deteriorated, particularly in the north, where nearly all structures have been decimated. The United Nations Development Program's report in May spotlighted the accumulation of over 39 million tons of debris in Gaza, posing significant obstacles to re construction efforts. Rajagopal emphasized the complexity of the debris, which is contaminated with unexploded ordnance, toxic waste, and hazardous materials such as asbestos, further complicating cleanup and rebuilding efforts. The expert also expressed grave concerns over the level of groundwater and soil pollution, which may jeopardize the prospect of resettlement for the current generation. Reconstruction efforts, Rajagopal asserted, hinge on the removal of debris, securing funding, and resolving geopolitical hurdles, particularly the end of occupation. He cited restrictions imposed by Israel on construction materials due to their potential dual-use nature as a significant barrier. Historical precedents, such as the post-2014 conflict period, saw the construction of fewer than a thousand homes annually, underscoring the challenges faced in rebuilding endeavors. Rajagopal concluded that without a cease in hostilities and occupation, reconstructive efforts could span 80 years, highlighting the urgent need for political resolution to facilitate and expedite the rebuilding process.
