UNIFIL’s Mandate in Lebanon May See Reinforcement, EU Official Suggests

NAPLES: The European Union's foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, has proposed the strengthening of the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, known as UNIFIL. His comments came during a recent gathering of G7 defense ministers in Naples, Italy, where discussions centered on the geopolitical challenges facing the region. According to Jordan News Agency, Borrell emphasized the importance of respecting U.N. forces globally, stating, "U.N. forces have to be respected all over the world." He highlighted the potential need to reassess the mission of UNIFIL, indicating that while a review might be necessary, the immediate priority should be establishing a ceasefire. Borrell underscored that any decisions regarding changes to UNIFIL's mandate would fall under the jurisdiction of the United Nations Security Council. The remarks reflect ongoing concerns about stability in Lebanon, a nation grappling with political and economic crises.
