German Chancellor ready for direct talk with Putin

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz Friday stressed his readiness to hold direct talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin despite Russia’s war against Ukraine.

Speaking at a news conference in Berlin, Scholz added that he was prepared to meet Putin again, referring that there is not any planned meeting.

On Germany’s aid to Ukraine, Scholz said his country had done a lot for the sake of Kiev, adding that this aid is important to that country.

However, he underlined the importance of assistance related to air defense system and training Ukrainian soldiers.

Scholz went to say Germany intends to raise its military spending to two percent out of its Gross domestic product (GDP), in line with the NATO’s vision.

Meanwhile, the German Chancellor pledged that he would work on developing relations between the European Union on one hand and Turkiye on the other.

Speaking at the same conference, he said that he managed to persuade the EU Commission, before the EU summit at the end of May, to issue a report about the EU and Turkish ties.

For his part, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has recently set a condition on his country’s approval of Sweden’s membership of NATO and resuming negotiations on Turkiye joining the bloc.
