Beirut: The handover ceremony at Lebanon's Ministry of Energy and Water was conducted on Thursday between outgoing Minister Dr. Walid Fayad and the newly appointed Minister Joe Saddi. The event was attended by advisors, directors-general, and department heads.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, Dr. Fayad welcomed Minister Saddi and highlighted their longstanding professional relationship. He expressed confidence in Saddi's ability to manage the ministry's responsibilities effectively. Fayad reflected on the challenges faced during his tenure, noting the dire state of Lebanon's energy sector when he assumed office. This included minimal electricity supply, a devastated Electricit© du Liban (EDL) headquarters, and severe fuel shortages.
During his time in office, Fayad implemented significant reforms aimed at improving the energy sector. These included increasing electricity supply to 10 hours daily without government subsidies, securing fuel agreements with Iraq, and restructuring electricity tariffs to restore EDL's financial health. He also focused on advancements in renewable energy, such as solar and wind power projects, and introduced legislative reforms to modernize the sector.
In the petroleum sector, Fayad emphasized the elimination of fuel subsidies, which bolstered the financial standing of oil facilities and enhanced transparency in fuel procurement. He also highlighted progress made in offshore gas exploration and licensing rounds.
Minister Saddi, in his remarks, pledged to continue the reforms initiated by his predecessor. He emphasized the need to depoliticize the ministry, combat corruption, and enhance institutional transparency. Saddi promised to build on the previous achievements while addressing remaining deficiencies, with a priority on improving the electricity and water sectors.
