Human rights, party leaders praise justice ministry’s statement on foreign funding case

Human rights and party leaders have praised a statement issued by the Justice Ministry, which shed light on the latest developments in investigations into the case of foreign funding of civil society organizations.

The Justice Ministry announced that the judges commission - delegated by the Court of Appeals - is about to finalize the case of foreign funding of civil society organizations, which includes 85 organizations.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the ministry said that investigations have concluded for 75 organizations, with orders of non-prosecution (dismissal orders) issued for them.

As for the remaining organizations, investigations into some of them are almost complete, while the rest are still being investigated, added the statement.

In statements to MENA, member of the National Council for Human Rights (NCHR) Abdel Gawad Ahmed said the step confirms freedom of civil work in Egypt and represents a positive development in the human rights file.

Chairman of the NCHR’s Economic Rights Committee Mohamed Mamdouh said this key move is one of the most important stages of enhancing participation in public affairs, noting that the foreign funding file had a great impact on creating tensions in the relationship between civil society organizations and various state institutions.

In this regard, he expressed thanks to state institutions that sought to put an end to outstanding issues.

First Deputy Head of the Conference Party El Saeed Ghoneim said the decisions taken in the case constitute a serious step by the state to strengthen human rights.

Head of Al Ittihad party Reda Saqr said concluding investigations with most of suspects in the foreign funding case is a significant step that supports the state’s orientation towards strengthening human rights in Egypt.

He added that the state supports civil society organizations, which he said has been shown in many relevant decisions taken in recent years.

The step was similarly praised by Head of Misr October Party Gihan Madih, in addition to the Reform and Renaissance Party.
