IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems Kicks Off in Abu Dhabi


Abu Dhabi: The 36th edition of the IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS) commenced on 14th October at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC), marking a significant event in the field of robotics and artificial intelligence. Hosted by Khalifa University of Science and Technology in line with the UAE Artificial Intelligence Strategy 2031, the conference, themed “Robotics for Sustainable Development”, will continue until 18th October 2024.

According to Emirates News Agency, Professor Ebrahim Al Hajri, President of Khalifa University, highlighted the alignment of hosting IROS 2024 with the university’s mandate and its contribution to the UAE’s strategic goals in artificial intelligence. Professor Al Hajri also emphasized the critical role of stakeholders, the global scientific community, and regional researchers and academics in making this international event possible in Abu Dhabi. He expressed pride in the UAE and Khalifa University for facilitating such a signifi
cant gathering, which is expected to foster collaboration and innovation in robotics globally and within the MENA region.

The opening day of IROS 2024 featured nine tutorial sessions and 31 technical workshops, with participation from researchers, scientists, and academics from around the world. These sessions covered a range of topics related to robotics technologies, fostering an environment of learning and exchange of ideas.

The conference also includes several competitions such as the euROBIN Manipulation, the F1 Tenth Autonomous Racing Competition, and the IEEE/RAS Quadruped Robot Challenge (QRC), which began on the first day. These competitions, continuing over several days, aim to showcase and enhance skills in robot navigation, manipulation, and sensing among other areas.

Furthermore, the event will host 13 forums with topics including “Robots for Sustainability and Sustainable Robots”. Numerous exhibits displaying the latest technologies and products in sustainable robotics have already attracted
significant interest.

The remainder of IROS 2024 promises more enriching activities including poster sessions, keynotes, panel discussions, and networking events, all designed to advance the field of robotics and its applications in sustainable development.
