Doha: The treacherous Israeli attack targeting a residential compound of several Hamas leaders in Doha constitutes a clear violation of international law and the UN Charter. It poses a direct threat to regional security and stability by targeting a sovereign state that’s been pivotal in mediation efforts, with international support, to end the ongoing Israeli aggression against the Palestinians in Gaza since October 2023.
According to the Union of OIC News Agencies, the targeting of a residential compound housing members and employees of the Hamas negotiating delegation reflects a dangerous escalation in Israel’s approach. This worrying trend towards expanding the scope of its attacks represents a blatant challenge to international will and a flagrant violation of the principles governing relations between states.
The attack has sparked widespread condemnation, with world capitals and international organizations expressing their support for Qatar and its sovereignty. They condemned the Israeli violations, which infringe upon international law and diplomatic norms.
The summit also aims to support Doha’s ongoing mediation efforts, protect the Palestinian people from occupation brutality, and send a strong message to the international community about confronting the actions of the far-right Israeli government, which continues to export its internal crises by expanding regional aggression.
Since the founding of the Arab League in 1945, 50 Arab summits have been convened, including 34 regular and 16 emergency summits. Doha has hosted three such gatherings, highlighting the city’s diplomatic significance.
The Palestinian cause has consistently been a priority for Arab leaders, who emphasize that peace and stability in the region depend on Palestinians regaining their rights as outlined in international charters and resolutions. The Arab League was founded to support the independence, security, and safety of Arab states and to defend them against threats or aggression.
Since the first emergency summit in Inshas, Egypt, in 1946, there has been a steadfast affirmation of Arab solidarity with the Palestinian cause, support for Arab states, and preservation of their sovereignty.
Over the years, various emergency summits addressed issues like the tripartite aggression against Egypt in 1956, the Arab Peace Project in 1982, the Palestinian Intifada in the late 1980s, and more recent Israeli aggressions.
In response to the current crisis, an upcoming emergency Arab-Islamic summit comes at a sensitive time as Israel expands its aggression, violating international laws. This calls for concerted efforts and unified ranks to decisively confront Israeli actions.
