Japan, UK Foreign Ministers Emphasize Integrated Approach to Regional Security

TOKYO: Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya and his British counterpart David Lammy highlighted the intertwined nature of Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific security during a recent discussion, emphasizing the need for comprehensive cooperation between the two regions. According to Kuwait News Agency, the ministers' dialogue, which lasted 25 minutes, was a platform for Iwaya to express his intent to deepen ties with the UK across various sectors. The UK is recognized as an Enhanced Global Strategic Partner by Japan, and both nations are keen on strengthening this partnership further. The discussion also touched upon significant advancements in bilateral relations, particularly through initiatives like the Global Combat Air Program and the forthcoming deployment of the UK's Carrier Strike Group to the Indo Pacific in 2025. The Global Combat Air Program, a collaborative effort involving Italy, aims to develop a cutting-edge fighter aircraft by 2035. Iwaya and Lammy also talked about boosting economic ties and increasing people-to-people exchanges to solidify the relationship further. They agreed on the importance of continued collaboration on global issues including the situations in the Middle East, East Asia, Ukraine, and climate change challenges.
