Joint Initiative Launched to Combat Misinformation in Lebanon

Beirut: Lebanon’s Ministry of Information, under the leadership of Information Minister Dr. Paul Morcos and in collaboration with the UNESCO Regional Office in Beirut, is intensifying efforts to bolster the credibility of media work and cultivate a culture of information verification. These initiatives are crucial in addressing the successive crises Lebanon faces and the increasing spread of misinformation, which aims to protect public opinion from disinformation during critical times.

According to National News Agency – Lebanon, the Ministry, with UNESCO’s backing, has established a specialized unit named ‘Fact Check Lebanon.’ This unit is tasked with verifying information and includes a dedicated webpage on the Ministry’s website to review news and publish fact-checking results. This development seeks to limit the spread of rumors, particularly during crises.

UNESCO’s Regional Office in Beirut has provided training for the unit’s staff through specialized workshops. These workshops focus on skills and methods for verifying information, tools for monitoring digital news platforms, and techniques for analyzing media content. The aim is to enhance the Ministry’s ability to track circulating news and counter misinformation effectively.

Additionally, the Ministry plans to strengthen cooperation with media outlets, journalists, and relevant institutions to develop mechanisms for verifying and sharing information. Such cooperation is anticipated to support the dissemination of accurate news and uphold professional media standards.

UNESCO is further supporting this initiative by involving young people from various Lebanese regions who participated in media and information literacy training. This engagement is part of the youth empowerment project in south Lebanon, funded by UNIFIL, and is expected to contribute significantly to the initiative’s success.

This joint initiative is anticipated to enhance the Ministry of Information’s capability in monitoring news, verifying its accuracy, and publishing fact-checking results to the public. This effort aims to curb misinformation and foster a more responsible and professional media environment.
