Beirut: The Kataeb Political Bureau held a virtual meeting, chaired by Party leader Samy Gemayel. After discussing the recent developments, the following statement was issued: According to National News Agency - Lebanon, the meeting took place on the 18th anniversary of the martyrdom of MP and Minister Pierre Gemayel, a significant event for the Lebanese people. The Political Bureau reflected on Pierre Gemayel's sacrifices for Lebanon, emphasizing his commitment to a free, sovereign, and independent nation. His martyrdom is viewed as a guiding force for the nation's values and aspirations. The Kataeb leader provided insights into his recent diplomatic efforts in France and the United States, where he engaged with officials to safeguard Lebanon's interests in ongoing negotiations. Gemayel stressed that discussions should not be dominated by the interests of Israel, Iran, or Hezbollah, but should prioritize Lebanon's sovereignty. He highlighted the necessity of a ceasefire and disarmament of groups in lin e with international resolutions and the Lebanese Constitution. The Political Bureau discussed reports about ongoing negotiations between Israel and Hezbollah, mediated by the U.S. They expressed concerns over certain terms being prepared and rejected, questioning the legitimacy of external influences, particularly the role of the Iranian Supreme Leader and his advisor in these negotiations. The Kataeb Party views this as an infringement on Lebanon's sovereignty and dignity. The Political Bureau firmly opposes Hezbollah being the sole negotiator, questioning the authority of those making binding decisions for Lebanon. They demand a negotiation process that respects constitutional principles, especially given the absence of a president. The bureau insists on transparency with the public regarding these negotiations. In line with this, the Kataeb Party calls for Parliament's active involvement in understanding and deciding on the terms of negotiations, ensuring that the Lebanese people have a say in ma tters of peace. The Political Bureau stresses the importance of implementing international resolutions, particularly those concerning the control of weapons by the Lebanese Armed Forces. Additionally, the Political Bureau welcomes UNESCO's decision to extend protection to 34 heritage sites in Lebanon amidst the ongoing conflict. They commend the efforts of parliamentarians and diplomats, including Ambassador Mustafa Adib, in achieving this protection.
