Kuwait Highlights Rising Threat of Organized Crime and Its Impact on Global Security

VIENNA: Kuwait has issued a stark warning about the increasing threat of organized crime and its adverse effects on societal security and development, linking it also to terrorist activities. This statement was made during the 12th session of the Conference of the States Parties to the United Nations Convention on Organized Crime, which took place on Monday. According to Kuwait News Agency, the remarks were delivered by the Attorney General, Counsellor Bader Al-Masad, who emphasized Kuwait's dedication to combating organized crime through adherence to its constitutional principles and national legislation. Al-Masad reiterated the nation's commitment to the effective implementation of the United Nations Convention against organized crime, aiming to bolster stability and foster an environment conducive to progress and development. In his address, Al-Masad highlighted the shared global commitment to combating all forms of crime while respecting human rights principles. He stressed the importance of internation al collaboration in exchanging expertise to enhance justice systems and establish institutions marked by integrity, accountability, and governance. Al-Masad also outlined several legislative measures Kuwait has implemented, including specialized anti-corruption laws, financial disclosure procedures, and initiatives against cybercrimes. Notably, he mentioned the enactment of the Cybercrime Law in 2015 and the ratification of the Arab Convention on Combating Cybercrime. Further, he pointed out Kuwait's efforts in strengthening international judicial cooperation through various agreements focused on legal assistance, the expulsion of criminals, and the transfer of convicted individuals serving sentences. Additionally, Al-Masad detailed the establishment of three significant operational entities within Kuwait: the Kuwait Financial Intelligence Unit (KwFIU), the National Committee for Anti-Money Laundering and Combating Terrorism Financing, and a national committee dedicated to implementing Security Council res olutions aimed at combating terrorism financing. The conference concluded with a focus on enhancing international cooperation and technical assistance to tackle organized crime, corruption, terrorism, and other emerging criminal threats effectively.
