Beirut: Minister of Culture Ghassan Salameh emphasized the ongoing responsibility of independence during his remarks at the "Write and Draw the Lebanon of Your Dreams" event held at the National Library. Salameh stated, "Independence is not a fleeting event in the history of the country; it is a daily duty for every citizen and every official to examine their conscience at the end of each day: Have I been loyal to my country's independence? Independence from what? Of course, independence from occupation, from tutelage, from foreign rule over our country, because we are worthy of governing ourselves."
According to National news agency - Lebanon, Salameh highlighted that independence also means liberation from internal disputes, infighting, and sectarianism, urging loyalty to the nation. The event, attended by First Lady Neemat Aoun and Minister of Education and Higher Education Rima Karami, gathered a large number of participants from across Lebanon. The occasion was organized to commemorate Independence Day and encourage the youth to express their aspirations for Lebanon through art and writing, in collaboration with the Ministries of Education and Social Affairs.
Minister Salameh addressed the attendees, welcoming the First Lady on her first visit to the National Library and expressing gratitude to Minister Karami for their collaborative efforts. He called upon the youth of the nation to envision and create a Lebanon of their dreams, reinforcing the notion that independence is a collective duty spanning generations. Salameh also announced the symbolic gesture of planting cedar trees in recognition of the children's participation, connecting their creative endeavors to a commitment to a greener Lebanon.
Salameh reiterated that November 22, known as Independence Day, marks the end of the French Mandate in 1943, but stressed that independence transcends a single day. He urged citizens to reflect daily on their contributions to preserving the country's autonomy and unity, emphasizing independence from foreign and internal challenges alike.
Minister Karami echoed these sentiments, encouraging the nation's youth to visualize Lebanon as they dream it to be, reinforcing the Ministry of Education's commitment to nurturing their visions.
Executive Director of the National Library, Gelnar Atwi Saad, acknowledged the presence of the First Lady and government officials, expressing gratitude for their support in strengthening Lebanon's cultural landscape. Saad emphasized the significance of Independence Day as a moment to renew commitment to freedom and unity, and to honor the sacrifices of those who fought for the nation's liberation.
The event concluded with a tour of the children's artwork, showcasing their dreams for a peaceful and prosperous Lebanon, reflecting a shared hope for a brighter future.
