Morcos Addresses Journalist Protection with UNIFIL Amid Rising Attacks

Beirut: Minister of Information, Attorney Dr. Paul Morcos, met with UNIFIL spokesperson Danny Ghafari to discuss mechanisms for protecting journalists amid ongoing attacks on civilians and peacekeepers. The meeting, also attended by Dr. Elissar Naddaf of Tele Liban, focused on addressing the safety challenges faced by media personnel in volatile regions.

According to National News Agency - Lebanon, Minister Morcos expressed deep concern over the frequent targeting of UNIFIL forces and civilians, particularly journalists. He extended condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives and condemned the ongoing violence. The discussions emphasized the need for robust mechanisms to ensure the safety and security of journalists despite the significant challenges in high-risk areas.

Minister Morcos highlighted the importance of collaboration with UNIFIL and other concerned parties to enhance protection measures. Ghafari acknowledged the seriousness of the threats faced by journalists in UNIFIL operational areas and underscored the mission's commitment to their safety. He mentioned that peacekeeper attacks violate international humanitarian law and called for adherence to obligations under Resolution 1701.

Ghafari also urged media outlets to coordinate with UNIFIL by informing them of assignments and personnel details to facilitate protection. He assured that UNIFIL would provide refuge to journalists in extreme danger and work towards delivering aid and assistance in affected regions.

In a subsequent meeting with the Greek Catholic League delegation led by Consul Gaby Abou Rjeily, Minister Morcos received support for his national positions and commitment to upholding the decisions of the Lebanese Council of Ministers. Abou Rjeily emphasized the importance of respecting constitutional institutions for the proper functioning of public life in Lebanon and expressed solidarity with Minister Morcos in his efforts for the nation's welfare.
