Beirut: MP Nadim Gemayel emphasized the need for urgency in decision-making and decisiveness in the ongoing negotiations involving Lebanon, Israel, and Hezbollah. He highlighted that while Ambassador Simon Karam is a commendable figure for the negotiations, the presence of Hezbollah remains a significant obstacle to reaching a resolution.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, Gemayel asserted that progress in the negotiations is unlikely unless the issue of Hezbollah and its weapons is addressed. He suggested that initiating discussions with Sheikh Naim Qassem and Hezbollah might be a strategic step before engaging with Israel.
Gemayel's comments were made during an interview with "Radio Free Lebanon" Channel, where he discussed the Lebanese army's formal presence south of the Litani. He reiterated the necessity of disarming Hezbollah and containing it north of the Litani, criticizing the organization's efforts to delay negotiations and disarmament through the ceasefire agreement. He noted that the Lebanese state should have begun implementing the agreement at the start of February.
He further stressed the importance of a unified Lebanese vision toward peace with Israel and other nations, to prevent Lebanon from becoming a hub for international terrorism. Gemayel acknowledged that the current administration has been supportive but called for more rapid decision-making and resolution of issues.
Discussing the upcoming parliamentary elections, Gemayel stated that the Kataeb Party is prepared and is actively coordinating with sovereign parties in Ashrafieh to maximize parliamentary seats, although alliances are still being finalized.
