SEOUL: North Korea detonated roads linking to South Korea on Tuesday, effectively cutting off land routes that were once celebrated as markers of cooperation between the two nations, according to reports from Yonhap News Agency citing Seoul's Defense Ministry. According to Kuwait News Agency, the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) disclosed that the North Korean military targeted the Gyeongui and Donghae roads with explosions around noon. In addition to the detonations, North Korea deployed heavy machinery to continue the destruction. The South Korean military, which reported no damages from the explosions, fired shots south of the Military Demarcation Line in self-defense and issued a warning against actions that could breach the Armistice Agreement. The JCS also noted heightened military preparedness and surveillance, in collaboration with the United States, in response to these aggressive moves by North Korea. This escalation follows a recent declaration by North Korea intending to "completely separate" from So uth Korea. This declaration included notifying the US military to avoid misunderstandings and potential accidental conflicts. This strategic shift aligns with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's framing of the two Koreas as "two hostile states," a stark departure from earlier gestures towards unification.
